Learn how to gather, verify and report information like CNN.

CNN Academy and Erbil Media City are partnering to bring a 12-week journalism course aimed at inspiring the next generation of journalists in Iraq. Through online workshops and webinar sessions with senior CNN journalists, participants learn how CNN gathers information, verifies sources and produces content for its multiple platforms. Participants will complete ten core courses on topics such as Ethics in Journalism, the Art of Storytelling and Breaking News Coverage. These courses will combine coursework on the CNN Academy Hub and live workshops with CNN Academy trainers and journalists.

At the end of the course, you will:

Understand newsroom workflows during breaking news coverage Experience the diverse roles of a news coverage team (producer, reporter, photojournalist, editor, editorial director) Apply fact-checking tools and social verification methods Enhance interviewing, investigative reporting and decision-making skills Improve technical skills for multiplatform content production Learn how to work under time constraints and with limited resources Receive a course completion certificate

The CNN Academy Newsroom Simulation

Put your journalism skills to the test in a realistic setting.

During the final week of the program, participants will take part in the CNN Academy Newsroom Simulation at the Yas Creative Hub in Abu Dhabi. The CNN Academy Newsroom Simulation is a competitive challenge to investigate and report on a fictional breaking news story and has been designed in consultation with CNN journalists from around the world that puts journalism skills to the test in a realistic setting. Each element of the scenario has been specifically tailored to reinforce journalistic best practices in conjunction with the broader CNN Academy curriculum. As part of the simulation, participants will produce video reports that will be judged by a panel of experienced CNN staff.

Course Certificate

Upon the course completion, participants will receive an official certificate, personalized for each participant and signed by CNN. It will be available both digitally and as a hard copy.

Who can Apply?

The CNN Academy Erbil course is aimed at individuals at the beginning of their journey in professional journalism.
• Participants can be in their last year of university or in their first years of employment at a media organization.
• Participants must be 18 or older
• Participants must speak Arabic, Kurdish or English. Most lectures will be delivered in English (with translations available) so a good proficiency is preferred
• Participants must make themselves available for occasional in-person sessions to be held in Erbil. They should also have access to an internet connection that will allow them to access the digital resources
